An Overview of Christianity and the Persian Language

Christianity has a long history in Iran, with its roots dating back to the early centuries AD. Early Christian communities were established in Persia, particularly by missionary efforts from the Eastern Orthodox and Catholic branches of Christianity. Christianity flourished for several centuries, especially in regions like Armenia, which became the first nation to adopt Christianity as its state religion in the early 4th century. However, with the rise of Islam in the 7th century, Christianity began to decline as the majority of the Persian population converted to Islam. Despite this, Christian communities, especially Assyrians and Armenians, have remained in Iran, continuing to practice their faith through the centuries. In the 20th century, Christianity experienced a revival among Persian-speaking Iranians, particularly after the 1979 Iranian Revolution. This shift led to the establishment of an Islamic Republic, which led many Christians to flee, but also spurred the growth of underground Christian movements within Iran.
