The Joshua Project is a Christian research organization dedicated to gathering and sharing vital information about the world’s most unreached people groups. It offers comprehensive data on ethnic groups, languages, and populations with minimal exposure to the Gospel, particularly those with fewer than 2% Christians. The project’s goal is to assist missionaries, churches, and organizations in strategically reaching these groups by providing tools such as maps, statistics, and prayer resources. By doing so, the Joshua Project aims to increase awareness, inspire prayer, and foster support for mission work focused on these underserved communities.

An Overview of Christianity and the Persian Language

Christianity has a long history in Iran, with its roots dating back to the early centuries AD. Early Christian communities were established in Persia, particularly by missionary efforts from the Eastern Orthodox and Catholic branches of Christianity. Christianity flourished for several centuries, especially in regions like Armenia, which became the first nation to adopt Christianity as its state religion in the early 4th century. However, with the rise of Islam in the 7th century, Christianity began to decline as the majority of the Persian population converted to Islam. Despite this, Christian communities, especially Assyrians and Armenians, have remained in Iran, continuing to practice their faith through the centuries. In the 20th century, Christianity experienced a revival among Persian-speaking Iranians, particularly after the 1979 Iranian Revolution. This shift led to the establishment of an Islamic Republic, which led many Christians to flee, but also spurred the growth of underground Christian movements within Iran. The translation of the Bible into Farsi played a crucial role in this revival, making Christian teachings accessible to the Persian-speaking population. Today, while Christians remain a minority in Iran, the growing Farsi-speaking Christian community continues to thrive, despite challenges, with the availability of Farsi-language Bibles and Christian literature supporting their faith.
